It seems like the world around us is changing faster than ever. You may feel like you’re living in a state of chronic uncertainty. The changes under the new administration have made this time especially stressful for certain groups in our community, including immigrants, people of color, and the LGBTQIA+ community.
If I can give you one piece of advice to help navigate this season we’re living in, it would be this: don’t be afraid to step back and care for yourself. You may be feeling the pressure to stay up on all the latest headlines and changes, but it’s important to find balance. Being engaged is one thing—but when engagement comes at the detriment of your mental health, that’s when it’s time to step back, unplug and realize that you don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. Because as much as we wish it weren’t the case, many of the things we are worrying about are out of our control.
We cannot control the actions of others. But there are things we can influence or control, including our reactions to what is happening around us, our immediate environment and the boundaries we set for ourselves.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, I encourage you to ask yourself this question: What am I worrying about?
Is it something I can control? If so, what small action can I take today to improve my situation?
Is it something I can influence? How can I make my voice heard in a way that feels right for me?
Or is it something I can’t control at all? If so, how can I let go of that worry, at least for today?
Stepping away to care for yourself is more than okay – it’s necessary. Taking a breather is not a sign of weakness. It’s an act of self-care and self-preservation.
